Rate: 2.5% of the declared value of your goods
Minimum charge: R50 (covers up to R2,000 worth of goods)
Billing: Appears as a separate line item labeled “Shipment Protection” on your invoice
Note: Charged upfront and non-refundable once the shipment is dispatched or collected

If you’re using TUNL Economy, remember—it’s a drop-off only service. No pickups, no fuss. For other services (like FedEx or UPS), collections are included if your address is in a serviced area. Not sure if your location qualifies? Contact support@tunl.to

If you're in Cape Town

You can drop off your shipment at our Cape Town warehouse:

📅 Weekly Cut-Off: To make the weekly Economy shipment, drop off your parcel by close of business on Tuesday. Need to get it to us but can’t come by? No problem. Many merchants use The Courier Guy, Uber Parcel, or similar same-day courier services to send their shipments over.

Why is this important for my business?

De minimis value has a significant impact on e-commerce, because business-to-consumer (B2C) orders are typically a much lower value than business-to-business (B2B). De minimis value provides faster clearance and opportunity to sell into markets competitively.

Example:

Seller: A business in Country A (let's say the South Africa) that sells goods internationally.

De Minimis Threshold: Suppose the de minimis threshold for Country B (let's say France) is $150 for shipments.

Situation: The seller from South Africa sells goods to individual customers in France.

How are Rates Calculated?

For international airfreight, rates are based on Chargeable Weight, which is the higher of the actual weight or the volumetric weight.

1. What is Chargeable Weight?

Chargeable weight is used when your parcel is bulky, meaning the courier will charge based on the size (volumetric weight) instead of the actual weight.
Our app calculates the chargeable weight automatically when you input the parcel's dimensions and weight.

2. How to Calculate Volumetric Weight:

Use the following formula to calculate volumetric weight:

length x width x height / 5000

Example: For a box measuring 50cm x 40cm x 30cm, the volumetric weight is:

(50 x 40 x 30) / 5000 = 12kg

3. Weight Breaks and Rates:

International couriers charge based on half-kilogram weight breaks. This means:
Parcels from 0.1kg to 0.5kg are charged the same rate.
Parcels over 0.5kg (even a fraction, like 0.5001kg) are charged at the next weight break (1kg).
